The Rio Tinto Group, founded in 1873, is an Australian-British multinational company and one of the biggest metals and mining corporations across the globe. The company was established after a mine complex on the Rio Tinto, in Spain was purchased by a multinational association of investors, from the Spanish government.
The Rio Tinto Group has undergone many mergers and acquisitions and today, is a world leader in commodity production, including diamonds; copper; aluminium; uranium; coal and iron ore. Apart from mineral extraction, the company also has operations in refining of iron ore and bauxite.
The Group has operations across 6 continents, but is mainly based in Canada and Australia. They currently employ over 50 000 staff members.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & SERVICE CONTRACT
Each year, Rio Tinto awards 4 to 8 students with bursaries for the duration of their tertiary studies. The bursary covers the full cost of study fees for a 1 to 4 year period.
Bursaries are awarded to students in the following fields of study:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mining Engineering
- Electronics Technologist
- Land Surveying
- Town Planning
- Occupational Hygiene
- Nursing Science
Once students have graduated, they will be required to take up a position as graduate-in-training at RBM. They will also be required to “work back” the bursary at RBM for an equal duration as that of their bursary award.
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizen
- Completed Matric
- Achieved the following minimum results for Matric: Level 5 for English, Level 6 for Mathematics and Science
- Studying or intend on studying full-time in one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Studying or intend on studying at one of the following tertiary institutes: University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, University of the Witwatersrand or the University of KwaZulu-Natal
