Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Bursary South Africa 2018 – 2019

ABOUT THE COMPANY – ALLAN GRAY ORBIS FOUNDATION

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was founded by Allan Gray in 2005 out of his dream to create a sustainable contribution to the country, by helping students who are the future entrepreneurs of Southern Africa.

The Foundation receives its funding from the donation of Allan Gray Limited’s taxed profits. The Foundation currently operates in 4 countries across Africa, namely South Africa; Namibia; Swaziland and Botswana

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation award up to 100 Fellowships to deserving students each year, specifically within the following fields:

  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Commerce
  • Science (excl Medicine)
  • Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)

The following study related expenses are covered by the fellowship award: university tuition fees, prescribed books, university accommodation, meals, monthly living stipend, tutor allowance. Students also receive academic support, mentorship and access to a personal development and entrepreneurial programme.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Grade 12/ Matric students:

  • South African citizen
  • Under 21 years old in 2018
  • Achieved a minimum of level 5 for Mathematics final results in Grade 11
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of level 6 for final results in Grade 11 (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Intend on studying toward a qualification in one of the following fields: Engineering, Law, Commerce, Science (excl Medicine) or Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)
  • Intend on studying at one of the following fields tertiary institutes: University of Johannesburg/ University of Pretoria/ University of the Witwatersrand/ Rhodes University/ University of the Free State/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Cape Town/ Stellenbosch University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
  • Believe in the future of South Africa
  • Possess entrepreneurial flair and passion
  • Demonstrate the following qualities: Courageous Commitment, Personal Initiative, Intellectual Imagination, Spirit of, Achievement Excellence
    Significance

First year University students:

  • South African citizen
  • Under 22 years old in 2018
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for 2018 mid year tertiary results
  • Studying toward a qualification in one of the following fields: Engineering, Law, Commerce, Science (excl Medicine) or Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)
  • Studying at one of the following fields tertiary institutes: University of Johannesburg/ University of Pretoria/ University of the Witwatersrand/ Rhodes University/ University of the Free State/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Cape Town/ Stellenbosch University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
  • Believe in the future of South Africa
  • Possess entrepreneurial flair and passion
  • Demonstrate the following qualities: Courageous Commitment, Personal Initiative, Intellectual Imagination, Spirit of, Achievement Excellence
    Significance

Second year University students:

  • South African citizen
  • Under 23 years old in 2018
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for 2017 final tertiary results & 2018 mid year tertiary results
  • Studying toward a qualification in one of the following fields: Engineering, Law, Commerce, Science (excl Medicine) or Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)
  • Studying at one of the following fields tertiary institutes: University of Johannesburg/ University of Pretoria/ University of the Witwatersrand/ Rhodes University/ University of the Free State/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Cape Town/ Stellenbosch University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
  • Believe in the future of South Africa
  • Possess entrepreneurial flair and passion
  • Demonstrate the following qualities: Courageous Commitment, Personal Initiative, Intellectual Imagination, Spirit of, Achievement Excellence
    Significance

Namibia Grade 12 students:

  • Namibian citizen
  • Under 21 years old in 2018
  • Will complete the National Benchmark Test by 30 September 2018
  • Achieved a minimum “C” symbol for Mathematics in Grade 11 (November results) AND Grade 12 (April results)
  • Achieved a minimum “C” symbol for English in Grade 11 (November results) AND Grade 12 (April results)
  • Intend on studying toward a qualification in one of the following fields: Engineering, Law, Commerce, Science (excl Medicine) or Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)
  • Intend on studying at one of the following fields tertiary institutes: University of Johannesburg/ University of Pretoria/ University of the Witwatersrand/ Rhodes University/ University of the Free State/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Cape Town/ Stellenbosch University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
  • Believe in the future of Namibia
  • Possess entrepreneurial flair and passion
  • Demonstrate the following qualities: Courageous Commitment, Personal Initiative, Intellectual Imagination, Spirit of, Achievement Excellence
    Significance

Botswana Grade 12 IEB, A levels, A/S, I/B students:

  • Botswana citizen
  • Under 21 years old in 2018
  • Will complete the National Benchmark Test by 30 September 2018
  • Achieved a minimum “C” symbol for Mathematics
  • Intend on studying toward a qualification in one of the following fields: Engineering, Law, Commerce, Science (excl Medicine) or Humanities (majoring in Economics/ Politics/ Philosophy)
